The South West of England, is one of the 9 official regions of England and is actually the largest of all 9 in terms of the geographical area that it covers, which in all is 9,200 square miles – an area that is actually larger than Wales.
This stretches from Gloucestershire in the north of the region, down through, Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall.
It grew significantly in the 19th century, when its port became the focus of coal exports from the eastern valleys of South Wales.
Until the rise of Cardiff from the 1850s, Newport was Wales' largest coal-exporting port. It is the largest urban area within the historic county boundaries of Monmouthshire and the preserved county of Gwent.
